Rise and Shine - The Tiger is Ready to ROAR!
As a new student it is a good suggestion to be on campus at least 30-45 minutes before your first class begins
- ask any late arrival why. Parking can be tricky and navigating the campus with so many students can delay
you from getting to class on time. It's an even better suggestion to refer to the campus
map and plot out your parking location and class locations the night before. The largest general access
parking lots are located on Southern and on Central. Priority lots are located a little closer to the perimeter
of campus, including two parking garages (Zach Curlin and Innovation Drive). It is up to you to determine where
you want to park. Keep in mind that a fee is charged for priority parking. Parking
Services can provide additional information on parkng options.
Hmmm, Where is Smith Hall?
The University of Memphis is a big place, so don't get too worried when you can't determine Smith Hall from
Smith Hall (yes, there are two). Someone is always around to guide you - just ask. Most classes are
scheduled with 15-20 minute breaks between class - this is an adequate amount of time to get from one building to
another without arriving late. However, it does not leave much time to waste if your classes are back-to-back.
It is a good suggestion to refer to the campus map and plot your
journey from building to building prior to class.
My Classroom, Oh, Where's My Classroom?
After locating the building where your class is scheduled, it is wise to confirm the classroom location. Typically,
classes meet in the classrooms indicated on your schedule. However, on occassion classrooms are reassigned do to
class enrollments or available resources in the classrooms. All buildings will have classroom rosters posted
in several places throughout the buildings.
Books, Books, and More Books
Books are generally required for all courses. Many of your professors will begin teaching on the first
day of class. However, this does not mean you must have all your books prior to class. It is a good
idea to visit the bookstore prior to the first day of class to determine which books are required for the courses
you are scheduled to take. Visiting the bookstore early will give you the opportunity to price the books,
determine your book expense, and get first choice at new or used books. The bookstore will have the books
and other required resources/material labeled by course, course number, and section. If you do opt to buy
your books early, be sure you pay close attention to your schedule and buy the correct books/materials - bookstore
staff will assist you. In order not to delay any homework assignments or assigned readings it is strongly
suggested that all required books be purchased before the second class meeting.
What to Expect in the Classroom
Generally, the first class begins with introductions and explanation of the syllabus. The professor will go over any required materials and discuss the course grading scheme. Your professor may spend whatever amount of time necessary to cover these topics - there may or may not be any lecture given during the first class meeting. Classes meeting for more than one hour do typically get started with lecture.
I'm Hungry - Where Can I Get Something to Eat?
There are several food choices on campus in order for you to grab something to eat between classes. Most buildings
will have drink and snack machines and several will have quick service eateries. Full serve cafeterias/food
courts are located in Jones Hall (Tiger Den) and Richardson Towers (The Blue Zone). Visit Tiger
Dining to see all locations and food choices on campus. It is not recommended to take food into the classrooms
- in fact, some professors will not allow food or drink in the classroom. Food and drink are strictly prohibited
in computer labs.
Well, that's pretty much what you should prepare for and what to expect on the first day of class. Like I hinted at before, the hard part is over - at least until mid-term exams. So, stay focused, get involved, and ask questions - your time spent at The University of Memphis WILL BE GREAT!
